General Electric was the talk among legal blogs this last week. Jim Calloway blogged about it, I read it, then couldn’t find the details. My colleague Tamara Thompson of PIBuzz emailed me recently inquiring whether I was going to write about it.

So what’s the big deal? It involves filing documents with the court that were improperly redacted. Not in the sense that they shouldn’t be redacted, but in the sense that the manner in which they redacted them was flawed and with a little “know how” you can reverse engineer the documents downloaded from Pacer and “uncover” the redacted contents. This happened in another notable case in California. Do you remember the entire fiasco about the book Game of Shadows? The US Attorney’s Office filed documents in their quest to get the authors to identify their source, but the documents were redacted in such a manner than when obtained through Pacer you can “reverse engineer” them. It’s the same issue with the GE filings.

As of the writing of this post the documents have been removed and replaced on Pacer. Believe me, I tried. If I can get a copy of the original download, I’ll post again and show you how to get the information out of them.
